Emergency lighting in supermarkets. One solution for every branch.
Long opening hours, busy aisles, refrigerated shelves and a stockroom behind the store: emergency lighting in a supermarket must be reliable – and consistent across many branches. We equip stores to one standard and document every test centrally in an app, branch by branch.
Whether a supermarket falls under retail premises rules depends on its size: in Germany they apply to more than 2,000 m² of sales and mall area. Below that, requirements follow from workplace legislation, the risk assessment, building permit and fire safety concept. Typical are escape route lighting to the exits, illuminated exit signs, safety lighting in stockrooms and back areas, and fully documented tests.
What applies?
- Escape route lighting to all exits, including through stockroom and delivery area
- Illuminated ISO 7010 exit signs, visible over shelves and promotional areas
- Over 2,000 m² sales area: retail premises requirements
- Cold and storage areas: observe temperature range and protection rating
- One standard for luminaires, design and testing across all branches
- Central logbook that regional managers and inspectors can access any time
This describes typical requirements, using Germany as the reference. What applies to your building depends on the building permit, fire safety concept, risk assessment and national or regional rules – exactly what we check during the free on-site survey.
Common mistakes
Pallets and displays block emergency exits and exit signs.
Different electricians, different systems – nobody has an overview of test status.
The monthly test passes but the full duration no longer does. Battery replacement in the maintenance contract solves this.
How we make it easy
We survey the building, escape routes and existing system and create a standard-compliant emergency lighting design – free and non-binding.
Exit sign, escape route and recessed luminaires plus emergency drivers – with self-test and LiFePO4 battery.
Every test documented digitally, deadlines monitored automatically – ready to show at any inspection.
Annual on-site inspection, all batteries replaced in year 5–6 and repairs – predictable costs instead of surprises.

Frequently asked questions
Does a supermarket need emergency lighting?
Almost always. Over 2,000 m² sales area it is required by retail premises rules; below that it usually follows from the risk assessment, building permit and fire safety concept – not least because of public access.
How do you equip many branches consistently?
With a standard of Series 19 luminaires, a template design and the digital logbook. Every branch is surveyed on site, deviations go into the design and the status of all stores is visible in one app.
What applies in cold and storage areas?
Cold and moisture place demands on temperature range and protection rating. We choose luminaires and emergency drivers to suit the room and include stockroom and delivery in the escape routes.
Can existing lighting be used?
Often, yes: emergency drivers make existing LED trunking and damp-proof luminaires emergency-capable. The calculation shows whether this is enough.
How do regional managers see test status?
In the digital logbook: per branch, per luminaire, with deadlines and reports – exportable for inspections and insurers.
