Student halls, hostels & guesthouses

Emergency lighting in student halls and hostels. So everyone gets out at night.

In a hostel guests change daily, in student halls every term – many barely know the building, and in an emergency it may have to be evacuated at night. At the same time operators often have no technical team of their own. We design the safety lighting, install self-testing luminaires and take over testing and documentation under the maintenance contract.

In short

In Germany, hostels and guesthouses with more than twelve guest beds are generally special-use buildings under the model accommodation regulation and need safety lighting on escape routes and illuminated exit signs. Many state building codes also classify residential halls as special-use buildings. National or state law, the building permit and fire safety concept define which areas and which duration apply; other countries have comparable rules.

What applies?

  • Safety lighting in corridors, stairwells and at exits – continuous to the outside
  • Illuminated ISO 7010 exit signs, clearly visible to guests unfamiliar with the building
  • Duration per building permit and fire safety concept – in accommodation sometimes longer than 3 hours
  • Include shared kitchens, laundry rooms and bike stores in the escape routes
  • Monthly function and annual duration tests, documented in the logbook
  • Clear responsibilities – including with property managers or leaseholders

This describes typical requirements, using Germany as the reference. What applies to your building depends on the building permit, fire safety concept, risk assessment and national or regional rules – exactly what we check during the free on-site survey.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes

Testing gets skipped

Without on-site technicians the monthly test is missed – until the fire inspection asks for it.

Old batteries, red LEDs

Status LEDs flash red and nobody reacts. In an emergency the luminaire no longer lights.

Signs under posters

Residents put notices or decoration over exit signs – regular checks are part of the job.

Frequently asked questions

When does a hostel need safety lighting?

In Germany, accommodation with more than twelve guest beds generally falls under special-use requirements under the model accommodation regulation – including safety lighting and illuminated exit signs. Details are set by the states; the building permit and fire safety concept are decisive.

Does this also apply to student halls?

Many German state building codes classify residential halls as special-use buildings, for which the authority can set additional requirements. Whether and where safety lighting is needed follows from the building permit and fire safety concept – in large halls with long corridors it is common.

How does this differ from a hotel?

The basics are similar: sleeping people unfamiliar with the building and evacuation at night too. Hostels and student halls, however, often have smaller teams and less in-house technical staff. You can find more on classic hotels on our Hotels & accommodation page.

How long must the emergency lighting operate?

3 hours is often required; in accommodation, depending on the rules and circuit type, it can be longer. The binding requirement is in the building permit and fire safety concept.

Who takes care of testing?

Under the NOTLUX maintenance contract we carry out the annual on-site inspection, battery replacement in year 5 to 6 and repairs. The self-test luminaires test themselves monthly and the digital logbook documents everything – even without a caretaker of your own.
