Emergency lighting on the farm. For hall, barn and farm shop.
Farms have long been businesses with staff, large machinery halls and often a farm shop with customers. In a power cut – frequently at night or in winter – the way out of hall and barn must be visible. We design emergency lighting that copes with dust and moisture and make existing LED high-bays emergency-capable.
If a farm employs staff, workplace legislation and the risk assessment apply: long or confusing escape routes and hazardous task areas lead to safety lighting with at least 1 lx on escape routes to EN 1838. Farm shops and sales rooms with customers, as well as larger agricultural buildings, may have additional requirements from the building permit and fire safety concept. Explosive atmospheres, for example at biogas plants, need luminaires specifically approved for them.
What applies?
- Risk assessment under workplace legislation as soon as staff are employed
- Escape route lighting and exit signs in machinery halls, workshops and barns – at least 1 lx on the centre line
- Farm shop and direct sales: escape routes for customers, requirements from permit and fire safety concept
- Protection rating suited to dust, moisture and cleaning – often IP65
- Observe the temperature range: Series 19 for 0 to 55 °C – unheated halls with frost need luminaires approved for it
- Explosive atmospheres, e.g. at biogas plants or grain stores, considered separately
This describes typical requirements, using Germany as the reference. What applies to your building depends on the building permit, fire safety concept, risk assessment and national or regional rules – exactly what we check during the free on-site survey.
Common mistakes
Extension, new workshop, new farm shop – emergency lighting is forgotten in expansions.
Luminaires without a suitable rating get dirty or corrode and fail unnoticed.
During harvest and peak season nobody has time for test rounds. Self-test and app only report when something needs doing.
How we make it easy
We survey the building, escape routes and existing system and create a standard-compliant emergency lighting design – free and non-binding.
Exit sign, escape route and recessed luminaires plus emergency drivers – with self-test and LiFePO4 battery.
Every test documented digitally, deadlines monitored automatically – ready to show at any inspection.
Annual on-site inspection, all batteries replaced in year 5–6 and repairs – predictable costs instead of surprises.

Frequently asked questions
Does a farm need emergency lighting?
It depends on use and staff. Once people are employed, the risk assessment decides – large halls, long routes and machinery often lead to safety lighting. For farm shops and larger agricultural buildings, the building permit and fire safety concept may contain further requirements.
What applies in a farm shop?
With customers in the building, escape routes and exits must remain visible in a power cut. The permit and fire safety concept set which emergency lighting is needed; often a few exit sign and safety luminaires are enough, which we plan to suit the room.
Which luminaires withstand dust and moisture?
In halls and barns, IP65 is often sensible. The emergency driver for LED high-bays up to 300 W is rated IP65; for dry areas such as farm shop, office or staff room, the exit sign luminaire and the compact emergency light are suitable.
What applies in unheated halls in winter?
Series 19 luminaires are specified for 0 to 55 °C ambient, the compact emergency light for 0 to 45 °C. Where it regularly freezes, you need luminaires explicitly approved for sub-zero temperatures – talk to us and we will plan those areas with you.
What about biogas plants?
In explosive atmospheres only luminaires approved for the relevant hazardous zone may be used; the operator's explosion protection document is decisive. We consider these areas separately and exclude them from the standard design.
