Clubs, nightclubs & bars

Emergency lighting in clubs. When the music suddenly stops.

A club is dark, loud and crowded, haze and light effects are part of the concept – and many guests only know the room from the dance floor. When the power fails, orientation must be there immediately, before unrest begins. We design exit signs and anti-panic lighting that work even in this environment.

In short

In Germany, clubs and nightclubs with rooms for more than 200 visitors generally fall under the state places of assembly regulations: safety lighting in the room and escape routes, illuminated exit signs that are generally lit continuously during operation, and usually a 3-hour duration. On the dance floor, anti-panic lighting of at least 0.5 lx under EN 1838 provides orientation. Smaller venues are governed by the building permit and fire safety concept; other countries have comparable rules.

What applies?

  • Safety lighting in bar areas, on the dance floor, in corridors, on stairs and at all exits
  • Illuminated ISO 7010 exit signs – generally maintained during operation
  • Anti-panic lighting of at least 0.5 lx on large areas without defined routes
  • Over 200 visitors: places of assembly requirements, usually 3-hour duration
  • Exit signs clear of decoration, curtains and effect lighting – recognisable even in haze
  • Ready before every opening, expert inspection and fire inspections

This describes typical requirements, using Germany as the reference. What applies to your building depends on the building permit, fire safety concept, risk assessment and national or regional rules – exactly what we check during the free on-site survey.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes

Decoration in front of the exit

Banners, curtains or lounge furniture hide exit signs – a typical defect at fire inspections.

Signs dimmed for ambience

Exit signs are switched off because they disturb. In places of assembly this is not permitted.

Haze swallows visibility

In dense haze, high-mounted signs disappear. Additional lower-mounted signs and route luminaires help.

Frequently asked questions

Does a club need emergency lighting?

As a rule, yes. In Germany places of assembly regulations usually apply above 200 visitors; below that, safety lighting follows from the building permit, fire safety concept and workplace legislation. Darkness and crowds make it especially important in clubs.

Must exit signs be lit all night?

In places of assembly, exit signs are generally lit continuously during operation – switching them off or dimming them for ambience is not allowed. The regulation, building permit and fire safety concept define what applies to your venue.

What is anti-panic lighting on the dance floor?

Anti-panic lighting provides at least 0.5 lx on large areas without defined escape routes, so people do not panic in a power cut and can reach an escape route. On the dance floor it is the basis for leaving calmly.

What about haze, lasers and effect lighting?

Haze reduces visibility and effect lighting can outshine exit signs. We design signs to remain recognisable anyway – with sufficient viewing distance, additional signs and, where needed, lower-mounted route guidance.

How do we test when we open at night?

Self-test luminaires test themselves during the day while the club is closed and report results to the app. Before opening you see at a glance whether all luminaires are ready – under the maintenance contract we visit once a year for the on-site inspection.
